After nearly a decade with my Canon Rebel XS, I finally made the jump to full-frame mirrorless. This post covers why I upgraded, my first impressions, and what changed the moment I picked it up.
Choosing a system, not a status symbol
My first instinct was to go all-out. A Canon R6 Mark II and expensive RF glass would have been an exciting way to enter the mirrorless world, but the more I thought about how I actually photograph, the less sense that approach made.
I did not need the most expensive camera I could justify. I needed a camera I would carry—along with enough batteries, storage, lighting, audio, and protection to use it without constantly working around the rest of the kit.
The goal wasn’t to buy the most expensive camera possible. The goal was to build a complete photography system that I’d actually want to carry and use.
The EOS RP gave me an unusually affordable path into full-frame photography. At $608.02 for the body, it left room to build the supporting system instead of ending the purchase at the camera.
What changed after the Rebel XS
The Rebel XS taught me photography. Its limits were part of that education: I learned to work carefully, anticipate focus, and make the most of a small, dependable DSLR. After years of shooting with it, though, moving to the RP felt like opening several doors at once.
The full-frame sensor is the obvious image-quality step, but the everyday differences matter just as much. Modern autofocus makes it easier to concentrate on a person instead of fighting the camera. The compact body is better suited to travel. Video, which the Rebel XS did not offer at all, is suddenly a real option.
The RP is not a cinema camera or Canon’s newest flagship, and that is fine. It gives me excellent stills, useful video, and a body that is small enough to bring with me. It is also inexpensive enough that I can treat it as a working tool rather than something too precious to risk using.
The lens that stays on the camera
I paired the RP with Canon’s RF 24–105mm f/4–7.1 IS STM. It covers the focal lengths I use most often, adds image stabilization, and gives me a sharper, more flexible everyday option than the old kit lens.
More importantly, it keeps the camera simple. I can leave one lens attached, put the RP in a small sling, and walk out the door without turning every outing into a packing exercise. For travel, portraits in context, architecture, and ordinary daily scenes, that practicality matters more to me than carrying the fastest or most expensive lens.
The adapter may have been the smartest purchase
The Canon EF–EOS R adapter connects the new body to the lenses I already know: my EF 50mm f/1.8 STM for portraits and low light, and the EF 75–300mm for wildlife, sports, and distant subjects. Even the old EF-S 18–55mm can serve as an emergency backup.
For about $140, I avoided replacing perfectly useful glass with several new RF lenses. The adapter also makes the future more interesting. Older EF lenses, Holga optics, vintage portrait lenses, and other inexpensive experiments can all become part of the system without changing the camera at its center.
That continuity is important. Upgrading does not have to mean discarding every piece of equipment that came before it.
The less glamorous parts make the camera usable
A camera body and lens may be the exciting purchases, but the supporting pieces determine whether the kit works away from home.

- Lighting: The compact Godox TT350C adds TTL flash for night portraits, indoor gatherings, camping, and more direct, experimental lighting.
- Audio: A DJI Mic Mini connected to the RP’s microphone input makes interviews, travel notes, and conversations genuinely usable on video.
- Carry: A small sling holds the RP with the 24–105mm attached, plus batteries, cards, audio, and cleaning supplies. My older Canon shoulder bag remains available when I need the entire kit.
None of these purchases is as dramatic as a new camera, but together they remove friction. The best equipment is still the equipment I am willing to bring.
A foundation rather than a finish line
The Rebel XS is not being retired completely. It remains a secondary body and a reminder that the camera that taught me can still make photographs. My existing lenses, tripods, softbox lights, bags, and small travel accessories now fit into a larger system instead of being replaced by it.
There is room to grow—a dedicated RF portrait lens, a better travel tripod, filters, and perhaps some strange vintage glass—but none of those things is required for the kit to feel complete today.
Looking back, choosing the RP feels less like compromising on a camera and more like clarifying what I wanted from one. For less than half the cost of the high-end setup I first imagined, I built something broader, more resilient, and more useful.
The RP improves the image quality. The 24–105mm makes it practical. The adapter keeps my old lenses relevant. The flash and microphone open new kinds of work. The batteries, storage, and sling mean I can keep shooting when I leave home.
It feels less like buying a camera and more like assembling a photography system I can keep expanding for years.
Update: One Sunset Photoshoot Changed My Mind
Update: After my very first real photoshoot with the Canon EOS RP, I completely changed my mind about SD card capacity.
During roughly an hour-long sunset portrait session with my girlfriend, shooting RAW + JPEG, I came home with 1,294 photos and videos totaling 53.15 GB. I knew I liked taking a lot of photos, but seeing over 50 GB disappear in a single evening made me realize that a 256 GB card simply wasn't enough for the way I actually shoot.
Fortunately, I found an incredible deal on a 512 GB SanDisk Extreme PRO sold and shipped by Walmart as an Open Box item for $113.40 after tax, compared to the normal $161.99 after tax for a brand-new one. I had already purchased the 256 GB version from B&H for $102.06 after tax, but returning it requires paying $10.87 in return shipping, leaving me with a refund of $91.19. Even after accounting for the return shipping, upgrading to the 512 GB card only cost me $22.21 more.
That made it an easy decision, especially since it wasn't just a capacity upgrade. The new card doubles my storage from 256 GB to 512 GB, while also increasing the advertised transfer speeds from 250 MB/s read and 170 MB/s write to 300 MB/s read and 260 MB/s write. My Canon EOS RP won't fully take advantage of those faster write speeds while shooting, but file transfers to my computer should be a bit quicker, and it's nice knowing I picked up the newer, faster version of the same SanDisk Extreme PRO line.
My plan now is to eventually own two 512 GB cards, but I'm not in any hurry. One 512 GB card is plenty for now, so I'll simply wait until another deal that's at least as good as this one comes along from a retailer I trust. Until then, I'm returning the 256 GB card and couldn't be happier with how this upgrade worked out.
